When you start a session, you will find yourself on the Home page.

Most searches can be conducted by mans of the basic (or "Quick Search") Search box at the left navigation area on the page. This search covers all of the content in the main body of the text. To conduct a search, type a word or phrase into the box and click the Search button or press the Enter/Return key.

Each entry on the Search Results list includes the Part, chapter name, and a link to the page number on which results are located. Select a result and click the page number to access the result in the book.

To return to your Results list, click the back button on your browser, or scroll down to Return to Search Results (located on the left navigation bar) link and click.

Search assumes that multiple words are connected by an implicit AND operator. When you enter more than one search word, results place the greatest weight on matches containing all of your words.

Tip - Narrow Your Search: Entering multiple words provides you with more specific search results, e.g., entering ocd medication will focus your results and bring up pages containing both terms, whereas a search for ocd casts a broader net and produces a greater number of results.

Tip - Word Usage and Search: If you are seeking several possible forms of a word, enter a shorter version or root word. For example, a search for brain circuit will locate brain circuitry and other variant instances within the text.

Tip - Searching for Names: When searching for references to a person, it is best to enter only the surname in order to pick up the various different citations of the person's name.

The Bibliography Search link leads to a search form that allows you to quickly locate publications cited in the References section of Treating and Preventing Adolescent Mental Health Disorders. You can use one or more fields, depending on the purposes of your search and how narrow or broad the results you need.

One of the more powerful aspects of this search is that it permits wide-ranging research queries, e.g., all cited articles containing the word "anorexia" in the title; cited articles authored by Gould that contain the word "suicide" and have been published since 1999--alternatively the search can be very specific, allowing you to locate a cited book on "anorexia: authored by Lock.

It helps to keep in mind that multiple search terms or and/or field boxes use an implicit Boolean AND operator. The greatest weight is placed on matches containing all of your words and all of the field boxes used.

Book (or chapter): designed for the titles of works published as books or for chapter titles published within books, this field allows users to enter the title of a book or book chapter in ful or in part, using any terms that may appear in a title.

Article Title: terms entered in this field will search the References section for journal articles, other serial publications such as conference proceedings, and dissertations.

Author: enter an author surname into this field to locate his or her works cited in the text.

Journal: enter one or more words appearing in the name of the journal.

Publisher: enter all or part of a publisher name.

Year(s) of Publication, from and to: you can enter a year in one or both fields to limit your search.

Tip - Searching with Multiple Fields: the variety of fields places powerful search tools at your disposal, but please note that all use the Boolean AND. Using multiple fields in a single search helps confine results, but it may sometimes confine more than you wish, with no matches resulting at all. If this occurs, try to confine terms to one or two field boxes at most.

The Left Navigation area provides useful features throughout the main body of the site. When in the book, you can quickly browse and access the main contents in the Chapter Scroller. After clicking the single or double-arrows to locate the chapter you want, click a link (for example, Chapter One: Defining Depression and Bipolar Disorder) to jump to the beginning of the text for that chapter.

In addition to the Chapter Scroller, you can browse contents and Parts on the main Table of Contents page, or access the Full Contents page via the link near the top of the Scroller.

The Full Contents offers additional access options, in that it lists specific pages for each section of the book, links to a list of Tables, and can be a useful navigational aid for those who wish to browse the structure of the entire work or are familiar with the print version.

Depending on your location within the site, you will see one or two "breadcrumb trails" just beneath the title banner. You can use the clickable links on the top label for quick access key areas such as the Home page and main Table of Contents.

Home can also be accessed by clicking the Treating and Preventing Adolescent Mental Health Disorders banner at the top of the screen.

The top, or global, navigation bar stays the same throughout the site. The links at the top of the page provide access to:
